Henry Darger (1892-1972) ha trabajado toda su vida en empleos de baja categoría en Chicago. Vivía solo y en situación de pobreza, no tenía amigos o familiares cercanos. Pasaba sus horas libres en soledad, entonces se entretenía trabajando en una novela ilustrada de 15.000 páginas titulada "Los Reinos de lo irreal". Su trabajo fue descubierto sólo después de que Darger fuera trasladado a un hospital en los últimos días de su vida. También escribió Darger revistas y una autobiografía.
